Adams Oshiomhole, former governor of Edo State and current senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, declared that Governor Godwin Obaseki is “politically dead” following the outcome of the recent governorship election in the state.

Oshiomhole made this statement during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, where he reflected on the election results and their significance for the political landscape in Edo.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Monday that Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the winner of the governorship race, marking a significant victory for the party.

Oshiomhole emphasized that the election results reflected the genuine will of the Edo people, who had chosen to back the APC’s candidate.

He pointed out that this electoral victory was a clear rejection of Obaseki’s leadership and marked the end of his political relevance in the state.

During the interview, Oshiomhole commented on statements made by the outgoing governor and others within the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He criticized what he viewed as incendiary rhetoric, referencing remarks from PDP leaders that seemed to suggest a willingness to resort to violence in the electoral process.

Oshiomhole firmly stated that such behaviour was unacceptable, aligning himself with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s stance that no election is worth the blood of any citizen.

In particular, Oshiomhole called out Obaseki’s comments in a recent interview, where the governor suggested that the election was a do-or-die affair.

According to Oshiomhole, the people of Edo have made their decision through the ballot box, and by choosing Okpebholo, they have effectively ended Obaseki’s political career.

He reiterated that the election process was peaceful and democratic, underscoring the importance of respecting the voters’ choice.

Oshiomhole further highlighted that Monday Okpebholo, who had previously been elected as a senator, was now poised to serve as the next governor of Edo State.

The former governor concluded by expressing confidence in the incoming administration’s ability to lead the state effectively, describing the outcome as a victory for democracy and the will of the people.
