Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed strong disapproval of the recent comments made by a Nigerian woman living in Canada, identified as Amaka Sunnberger. Sunnberger, in a controversial TikTok video, allegedly called for violence and the poisoning of Yoruba and Edo people, sparking widespread outrage.

In response, Obi took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to denounce the statements, emphasizing the importance of national unity.

He stressed that tribalism and hatred should not be allowed to sow division among Nigerians, especially at a time when the country is facing significant challenges that require collective action.

Obi wrote, “I firmly condemn the hateful remarks and actions allegedly made by a Nigerian woman in Canada against fellow Nigerians from different ethnic backgrounds. Comments that foster division have no place in our society.”

He went on to urge Nigerians to focus on common issues rather than allowing themselves to be divided along ethnic lines.

“As Nigerians, we must come together to tackle our shared problems. Let’s not allow hatred or tribalism to create unnecessary rifts among us,” he stated.

The former presidential candidate reiterated his long-standing position against tribal, religious, and political division in the country.

“I have always stood against the polarization of Nigeria, whether it’s through tribalism, religious sentiments, or political partisanship,” he said.

Obi further questioned the usefulness of such divisive rhetoric, asking what benefits it brings to the nation.

“What do we, as a people, gain from tribal or religious discrimination? Does it help solve our pressing health and education challenges? Does it lift our people out of poverty? Does it lower the prices of basic commodities like bread, rice, garri, or yam?” he asked, calling for introspection on how Nigerians approach these sensitive issues.

His remarks serve as a reminder that in times of difficulty, unity and understanding are critical to addressing the challenges that Nigeria faces, rather than allowing ethnic and religious differences to tear the nation apart.

The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.

However, the FG announced that the passing-out parade from camp will be cancelled, and corps members will now spend six weeks in camp instead of three weeks.

“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”

The federal government reacted to claims stating that the new tax rules will be imposed on telecommunications and petroleum products for Nigerians.

The FG released a statement to explain the process and stated that there is no intention to place taxes on telecom and petroleum products and services.

“Those recommendations do not amount to government policy and are not binding on Nigeria. Decisions on tax matters are taken through established constitutional and legislative processes and are guided by national priorities and prevailing economic realities.”
