Afrobeats sensation Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, has revealed that his mother’s struggles with poverty were a significant driving force behind his decision to pursue a career in music.

In a recent interview with Capital Xtra London, Rema shared his personal motivation, explaining how his mother’s financial difficulties deeply affected him.

He recalled how his mother often had to walk long distances due to her inability to afford transportation. This situation fueled his determination to achieve success quickly.

“I was deeply troubled by seeing my mother walk every day because she couldn’t afford bus or bike fare. It was a powerful motivator for me to elevate my situation and succeed,” Rema said.

Once he began earning from his music career, Rema prioritized buying a car for his mother over acquiring one for himself. He described the moment he presented her with the car as a significant milestone, emphasizing how much he values her support and sacrifices.

“Instead of buying a car for myself first, I focused on getting one for my mum. We went out for dinner, and I surprised her with the car. Many might choose to prioritize their own needs, but I wanted to honor her first,” he explained.

Rema also expressed profound gratitude for his mother’s unwavering support and prayers, attributing much of his success to her.

“She’s been an incredible mother and the cornerstone of my success. Her pride in my achievements means everything to me.”
