RMAFC Clarifies Senators’ Monthly Salaries and Allowances Amidst Public Debate

Published

on

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has clarified that each Nigerian senator earns a monthly salary and allowances totaling ₦1,063,860.

This statement follows claims by former Senator Shehu Sani that senators receive a ₦13.5 million monthly running cost in addition to a ₦750,000 salary.

RMAFC Chairman M. B. Shehu highlighted that while the commission sets lawmakers’ remuneration, it lacks the constitutional authority to enforce its implementation.

He also explained that some allowances are regular, while others are paid as needed.

Furthermore, the commission clarified that aside from top officials like the president and vice president, public officers no longer receive housing allowances.

This clarification comes amid ongoing debates regarding the transparency and fairness of lawmakers’ earnings in Nigeria.
