Maverick musician Seun Kuti has raised questions about the sources of wealth for some of his peers in the Nigerian music industry.

During a recent Instagram Live session, Kuti expressed skepticism about the substantial wealth some artists claim to have amassed, suggesting that their riches might not solely be from their musical careers.

Kuti, who has been touring internationally for over two decades, revealed that he is only now building his first house.

He pointed out the apparent disparity between his financial situation and that of other artists who seem to have acquired immense wealth despite having relatively short careers and fewer hit songs.

“I’ve been touring for over 20 years, and I’m just now building my first house.

Where is the music money coming from? Artists with barely two songs are already buying Lamborghinis and G-Wagons.

Where’s this music money coming from?” he questioned.

His comments come amidst a growing trend of Nigerian musicians publicly flaunting their affluence and discussing the profitability of the industry.

Rapper Shallipopi, in a recent interview, highlighted the lucrative nature of the music scene, attributing his financial breakthrough to the success of a few hit songs.

Similarly, controversial singer Portable previously claimed that the music industry offers more financial rewards than other high-risk ventures like rituals, fraud, or even football.

Kuti’s remarks invite a broader discussion about the true profitability of the Nigerian music industry and the transparency surrounding artists’ income sources, sparking curiosity and debate among fans and observers alike.

Popular Nigerian skit maker Oluwadolarz has opened up about the challenges he faces due to misconceptions surrounding his stage name.

During a chat on the Open Up podcast, he revealed that some brands hesitate to work with him simply because of his name, assuming it has negative connotations.

Sharing the backstory, he explained that the name “Dolarz” came about in 2010 when he was still a stand-up comedian. He had cracked a joke about the fluctuating value of the dollar, and the nickname stuck.

“People forgot my real name because that joke became my identity. By 2014, I started adding ‘Oluwa is involved’ whenever people called me Dolarz. That’s how ‘Oluwadolarz’ was formed,” he said.

Unfortunately, the name has led to a lot of false assumptions. “Many think I’m a Yahoo boy or involved in shady activities. Brands don’t want to associate with me because of that misconception,” he added.
