Super Eagles assistant coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, described the team’s 3-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Galaxies as a perfect Christmas and New Year gift for Nigerians.
The match, which took place in Uyo on Saturday, secured Nigeria’s spot in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a competition for players from their domestic leagues.
With the tournament set to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, this marks the Super Eagles’ return to the competition after a six-year absence.
Ogunmodede expressed his joy, emphasizing the importance of bringing happiness to Nigerians, especially during the festive season.
“I’m thrilled about today’s win. I’m happy for Nigeria, for the country, and for the people’s unity,” Ogunmodede said after the match.
“This is a gift for the Yuletide and the New Year, and we are proud to give our people something to celebrate.”

“I remember being 15 and going into my final year, and I told myself that if I didn’t get into a professional club, I would quit football. It was that simple,” he said.
“I would just stop pursuing it seriously and only play for fun. Thank God I eventually got a club, because I honestly don’t know where I would be otherwise.”

Head of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, shared that the big-name players on the team are not happy about being benched.
He recalled when he took out Samuel Chukwueze during the match against Tanzania.
“Yes, of course, we’ve in this team a lot of big names. They are competitors; they aren’t happy when they go to the bench,” Chelle said at his post-match interview.”
