The United Nations has issued a call for calm in Bangladesh amidst escalating violence related to anti-government protests, which have intensified despite the recent resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday in response to the widespread demonstrations that have turned increasingly violent.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres is closely monitoring the situation, as noted by Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq.

Guterres has urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and maintain a peaceful approach, emphasizing the importance of a smooth, orderly, and democratic transition in the country.

He has expressed strong solidarity with the Bangladeshi people and stressed the need for respect for human rights.

Haq also highlighted the Secretary-General’s call for a comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation into the acts of violence that have occurred.

According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the violence has resulted in over 300 deaths, including those of children, since student-led protests began in July. Additionally, more than 20,000 people have been injured.

This period of unrest marks one of the bloodiest in Bangladesh’s history.
