At least 20 people, including a baby, have died after an overcrowded boat sank on the Lukenie River in the Western Democratic Republic of Congo over the weekend. The incident occurred overnight from Saturday to Sunday as the motorized wooden vessel, carrying approximately 300 people and cargo, struck debris while en route to Nioki, according to Kutu district administrator Jacques Nzenza.

Search efforts have recovered 20 bodies so far, with the search still ongoing. Nzenza emphasized the dangers of night travel on rivers, a common mode of transportation in the country due to the scarcity of roads. This tragedy follows a similar incident in July, where 25 people died in a boat sinking on the Congo River, and a 2019 disaster on Lake Kivu that claimed around 100 lives.

“No, I don’t think many people will blame the Tinubu administration for what is happening now because President Donald Trump, when he first made the threats, it was clearly not in coordination with the Tinubu administration or the government of Nigeria,” Jega said.
