2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana Secure Big Wins

Here are the results from Match Day 5 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the African zone, played on Friday.

In Group C, Nigeria secured a 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, thanks to two first-half goals from Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen. The win moved Eric Chelle’s team to fourth place with six points. South Africa also defeated Lesotho 2-0 to take the top spot in the group.

In Group G, Algeria earned a 3-1 victory over Botswana, while Burundi lost 0-1 to Côte d’Ivoire. Ghana delivered a dominant performance, crushing Chad 5-0, and Guinea played to a goalless draw with Somalia.

Group H saw Equatorial Guinea claim a 2-0 win against São Tomé and Príncipe. In Group A, Burkina Faso thrashed Djibouti 4-1, while Egypt edged Ethiopia 1-0.

In Group B, DR Congo secured a narrow 1-0 win over South Sudan. In Group E, Morocco, the 2025 AFCON hosts, defeated Niger 2-1.

Speaking during a recent interview, Bassey shared that he once made a personal promise to himself to quit pursuing football professionally if he failed to secure a spot at a professional club.

“I remember being 15 and going into my final year, and I told myself that if I didn’t get into a professional club, I would quit football. It was that simple,” he said.

“I would just stop pursuing it seriously and only play for fun. Thank God I eventually got a club, because I honestly don’t know where I would be otherwise.”
