The Chairman of the Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jeret Tenebe, has expressed the party’s hope that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will continue conducting elections with the same transparency and fairness as seen in the recent Edo governorship election held on Saturday.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday evening in Benin, Tenebe remarked that if INEC maintains this standard in future elections, it could lead to a much-improved electoral process for Nigeria.

Tenebe described the Edo governorship election as the fairest he had ever witnessed, rejecting accusations that the APC rigged the election in favour of its candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

He emphasized that the election was conducted with integrity and that the results truly reflected the will of the Edo people.

He praised Okpebholo, now the Governor-elect, stating that his leadership would usher in significant development for Edo State.

Tenebe emphasized that Okpebholo’s administration would focus on empowering both women and youths, as well as fostering unity across the state.

He expressed optimism that Okpebholo’s tenure would bring lasting positive change, ensuring progress in various sectors, especially for marginalized groups.

Addressing the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, Tenebe attributed it largely to the influence of Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose administration had become unpopular among the electorate.

He argued that the PDP’s loss was a clear reflection of Obaseki’s dwindling support, stating, “Nobody wants anything associated with Obaseki anymore.”

Tenebe went on to reiterate the party’s commitment to fair elections, saying, “Our party cannot rig elections because we are not INEC.

What we saw on Saturday was the fairest election ever conducted in this state.

We are praying that INEC continues like this, and if they do, Nigeria will finally see a proper and transparent electoral process.”

He concluded by describing the victory as one for the entire state, adding, “This victory means so much to us.

It’s a win for all Edo people. Okpebholo’s leadership will empower the state’s youth, uplift women, and promote respect for traditional institutions, uniting Edo in progress.”

The APC chairman’s remarks reflect the party’s confidence in the fairness of the election, and its belief that Okpebholo’s leadership will steer the state towards growth and development, following what has been hailed as a landmark election.

“President Tinubu, have mercy on our people and increase the minimum wage to ₦200,000 now. I don’t think anyone can survive on the current ₦70,000 minimum wage. ₦70,000 is nothing. If we don’t solve the minimum wage problem, we can’t solve crime.”

Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has faced backlash after suggesting that opposition figures, including Peter Obi, could contribute to President Tinubu’s chances of re-election if opposition votes remain divided.

He stated “If Tinubu gets re-elected in 2027, blame Peter Obi and the other contractor-general. With all the insecurity and kidnapping in the country, they are the ones aggressively working for his second term by ensuring opposition votes are divided like they did in 2023.”

His comments sparked criticism from many Nigerians, who argued that Peter Obi is not the only opposition figure and should not be solely blamed for political divisions.
