Coalition Calls for Oil Sector Corruption Probe Amid Price Hike

Published

on

The Coalition for Energy Reforms and Good Governance Advocacy has urged the Federal Government to investigate alleged corruption in the oil sector.

This call came during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, following the recent increase in petrol prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The coalition’s convener, Yakubu Dauda, criticized NNPCL’s leadership under Mele Kyari for failing to fulfill promises to improve the petroleum sector, particularly in reviving local refineries.

Dauda emphasized the need for a thorough audit of NNPCL’s operations, particularly concerning corruption allegations and unjustified price hikes for petrol. He called for accountability for those responsible for inflating fuel prices and undermining local refineries, regardless of their status. Additionally, he urged the government to invest in local refineries and reduce reliance on imported fuel, asserting that Nigeria has the resources and expertise to become a net exporter of petroleum products if it can eliminate corruption in the industry.
