Edo PDP Calls for Unbiased Probe into Benin Airport Attack
The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Campaign Council has called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the recent attack at Benin Airport.
This incident, which occurred on July 18, 2024, involved an assault by suspected political thugs on Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, and Philip Shaibu, the reinstated deputy governor of Edo State, upon their return from Abuja.
The attack tragically resulted in the death of Police Inspector Akor Anuh, who was attached to Senator Okpebholo.
Inspector Anuh was a dedicated officer assigned to protect the APC governorship candidate, who is currently serving as the senator for Edo Central.
Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, the Director General of the Asue/Ogie Management Campaign Committee, addressed the media in Benin City on Wednesday.
During the press briefing, he strongly criticized the police for what he described as harassment and intimidation of PDP members, alleging that these actions were being conducted at the behest of the APC.
Iduoriyekemwen emphasized the need for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the attack.
He condemned the alleged influence of APC members who, according to reports, are openly flaunting their connections and asserting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had promised them control over Edo State, despite the electoral preferences of its residents.
The PDP Campaign Council has thus urged the IGP to uphold the integrity of his office and remind the police force that their duty is to serve all Nigerians equally, not to act as an extension of the APC.
In response to the situation, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Funsho Adegboye, announced that the investigation has been moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He advised that any further comments or inquiries should be directed to the central office in Abuja.

Analyst Says Tinubu Not Responsible for Recent U.S.-Linked Airstrike Claims
Nigerian news analyst, Mahmud Jega, has shared his opinion on the recent airstrike carried out by the United States in Nigeria, stating that Nigerians should not blame President Bola Tinubu for the incident.
Jega made this statement during a recent interview, where he said he does not believe many people will hold the Tinubu administration responsible, as Donald Trump had issued threats against Nigeria long before Tinubu’s administration.
“No, I don’t think many people will blame the Tinubu administration for what is happening now because President Donald Trump, when he first made the threats, it was clearly not in coordination with the Tinubu administration or the government of Nigeria,” Jega said.
