EFCC Arrests Edo State Officials Days Before Handover, Halts Government Operations

Less than 11 days before outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki hands over to Governor-Elect Sen. Monday Okpebholo, officials in Edo State have been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Sources report the arrests aim to prevent last-minute withdrawals from state accounts following a budget approval by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Due to these detentions, government activities have stalled, with civil servants and pensioners reportedly unable to receive their payments, and security expenses and other obligations left unmet. The EFCC is expected to hold the officials until November 12, Obaseki’s final day in office.
