Four Suspects Arrested for Attack on Lagos BRT Bus
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Enforcement Agency Task Force has apprehended four suspects in connection with the August 13 attack on a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle.
During a press briefing held in Lagos on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Task Force, CSP Tayo Akerele, provided details of the incident.
He explained that the bus was en route from Orile-Iganmu to Alaba Suru when it was violently attacked by a group of individuals. The suspects have been identified as Ilesanmi Kazeem, Ibrahim Lawal, Daniel Abati, and Mohammed Ali.
The attack, which targeted a BRT bus with the identification number 240216, occurred as the vehicle travelled from the Mile 2 Terminal to Lagos Island.
The assailants reportedly stopped the bus near Alaba Suru, where they robbed the passengers of their belongings and caused significant damage to the vehicle.
Akerele emphasized the government’s unwavering stance against acts of violence and vandalism.
He further stated that prosecuting the culprits would serve as a warning to others inclined to commit similar crimes.
“These miscreants have a history of engaging in such destructive acts,” Akerele said. “We are determined to bring them to justice, which we are in the process of doing.”
In addition to Akerele’s remarks, ACP Emmanuel Oyewole, who oversees operations in the Lagos State Command, revealed that the suspects were arrested during a raid conducted by task force personnel in the area where the attack occurred.
Oyewole expressed his disappointment over the brazen daylight assault, in which the bus passengers were not only robbed but also injured. He reassured the public that the Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring such incidents are not tolerated.
“Four suspects have been arrested so far, including 30-year-old Mohammed Ali, who was apprehended and subsequently named the other three individuals involved in the attack. However, some suspects remain at large,” Oyewole stated.
He condemned the daytime nature of the crime, describing it as a highly reprehensible act. He assured that upon completion of the investigation, the suspects would be charged in court and face the full force of the law.
The Lagos State Government continues to crack down on criminal activities and ensure the safety of commuters, particularly those using state-regulated transport systems like the BRT.
Authorities are working diligently to apprehend any remaining suspects and prevent future occurrences of such attacks.

FG Extends NYSC Orientation Camp From 3 to 6 Weeks
The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.
However, the FG announced that the passing-out parade from camp will be cancelled, and corps members will now spend six weeks in camp instead of three weeks.
“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”

Federal Government Clarifies Position on Proposed Tax Recommendations
The federal government reacted to claims stating that the new tax rules will be imposed on telecommunications and petroleum products for Nigerians.
The FG released a statement to explain the process and stated that there is no intention to place taxes on telecom and petroleum products and services.
“Those recommendations do not amount to government policy and are not binding on Nigeria. Decisions on tax matters are taken through established constitutional and legislative processes and are guided by national priorities and prevailing economic realities.”
