The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has extended financial assistance to the families of 16 police officers who were involved in a tragic road accident on September 24, 2024.
These officers were returning to Kano after completing a special election duty in Edo State when their vehicle was involved in an accident along the Zaria-Kano Expressway, near Karfi in Kura Local Government Area.
The accident resulted in the death of several officers, with others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
In response to the unfortunate event, the IGP made a generous donation to support both the families of the deceased officers and those who survived the accident.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP provided compensatory payments of N10 million each to the families of the five officers who lost their lives.
Additionally, those who are still receiving medical treatment were given N2 million each, while officers who have been discharged were awarded N500,000 each, bringing the total relief fund distributed to N60 million.
Inspector-General Egbetokun emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and well-being of its personnel.
He also directed the Police Insurance Unit and the Police Account and Budget Department to promptly begin the processing of life insurance benefits for the families of the deceased officers.
This includes ensuring that the statutory welfare benefits due to the affected officers are processed and disbursed without delay.
The financial donations provided by the IGP are in addition to the benefits that will be paid out under the NPF’s insurance and welfare schemes.
This initiative by the IGP underscores his commitment to ensuring the dignity and welfare of police officers and their families during times of loss and hardship.
Egbetokun expressed his deepest condolences to the grieving families and reiterated the Force’s dedication to supporting its personnel, both during their service and in times of personal tragedy.
He also wished those still receiving treatment a speedy recovery, stressing that the support being provided is aimed at enhancing the overall morale of officers, which is essential for maintaining their effectiveness and dedication to service.
The IGP remains focused on building a more resilient and motivated police force, where the well-being of officers and their families is prioritized at all times.
