Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and a respected Nigerian political figure, recently expressed his pride and optimism over the election of Nigerian-born Kemi Badenoch as the leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party.

Obi praised Badenoch’s rise as an inspiring moment for Nigerians, especially during a time when many are questioning their nation’s future and potential.

Badenoch’s success, he noted, stands as proof of the global influence and potential that Nigerian and African youth hold.

Obi believes that her journey serves as a wake-up call to Nigeria, a nation where young, capable leaders are often overshadowed by older, less progressive figures.

Kemi Badenoch, born Olukemi Olufunto Adegoke in London to Nigerian parents, has risen through the ranks of British politics with a reputation for her principles and a strong stance on diversity and opportunity.

Known for her straightforward approach, she has served in various ministerial roles before this historic election.

Her journey has been an inspiration, demonstrating that people from different cultural backgrounds can not only participate in but lead in countries beyond their birthplace.

For Obi and many Nigerians, Badenoch’s success shines a light on the importance of diversity and shows what can be achieved when barriers are broken and talent is valued over connections or lineage.

Reflecting on this milestone, Obi called on Nigeria to adopt a similar mindset by rejecting tribalism, religious bias, and the “my turn” syndrome that he says often hampers true progress.

Instead, he urges Nigerians to embrace leaders based on their abilities, ideas, and readiness to address the country’s challenges.

He emphasized that Nigeria could transform itself by valuing leaders who demonstrate integrity and a forward-thinking approach rather than clinging to outdated political traditions.

In his message, Obi congratulated Badenoch for her inspiring achievement, seeing it as a powerful motivator for young Nigerians.

He also urged citizens to take this moment as an opportunity to push for change within the country’s leadership structure.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that the outcome of the 2027 general elections will be based on the performance of candidates, not defections.

The party stressed that defections alone do not win elections, noting that credibility, leadership, and results matter more. This was said in response to comments credited to former governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The APC also dismissed claims that the opposition’s performance in Lagos weakened the party, pointing out that voters later reaffirmed their support by re-electing the APC in the governorship election and subsequent polls.
