Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has expressed his strong commitment to supporting education in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his X handle, Obi highlighted his recent visit to the Almajiri school in Yola, followed by a meeting with the students of Saint Augustine College in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State.

During the visit, Obi provided essential learning equipment, including 10 laptops and a printer, to aid the students in improving their computer science and information technology skills.

Obi emphasized that providing students with the right tools and resources for learning is not just a duty but a critical necessity for securing a better future for the country.

He noted that education is a key pillar in the development of any nation, and empowering students with access to modern technology is crucial for bridging the growing digital divide in Nigeria.

The students’ enthusiasm for learning, according to Obi, was truly inspiring.

He shared that witnessing the eagerness of the students to engage with the new equipment was both motivating and encouraging.

Obi believes that initiatives like the one he launched in Adamawa are vital for fostering innovation and excellence within Nigerian schools, particularly in the fields of technology and computer science, which are becoming increasingly essential in the modern world.

“Supporting education by equipping students with the right tools and resources is not just a responsibility but a necessity for building a better future,” Obi wrote.

He continued, saying that projects like this are essential for bridging the digital divide, an issue that has become more evident in a world where technology is key to success in almost every sector.

The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.

However, the FG announced that the passing-out parade from camp will be cancelled, and corps members will now spend six weeks in camp instead of three weeks.

“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”

The federal government reacted to claims stating that the new tax rules will be imposed on telecommunications and petroleum products for Nigerians.

“Those recommendations do not amount to government policy and are not binding on Nigeria. Decisions on tax matters are taken through established constitutional and legislative processes and are guided by national priorities and prevailing economic realities.”
