Rivers State Needs 15,000 Teachers, Says NUT
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Rivers State has highlighted a severe teacher shortage, estimating a need for 15,000 new teachers. NUT Chairman Dr. Collins Echekpu reported that the deficit spans primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools. He urged the state government to address this issue urgently, noting that classrooms remain empty and calling for immediate intervention.
Echekpu also advocated for implementing a new retirement age of 65 years and 45 years of service for teachers, emphasizing the lack of adequate office furniture and classroom resources. He stressed that while the government has made some efforts, such as promotions, the shortage of teachers remains a critical problem.
