Two undocumented Nigerian nationals, Ikemukwu Benjermin Ezirim (39) and Christian Valentine Uchenna (37), have been remanded in custody in South Africa for alleged drug-related offenses.

The suspects appeared before the Volkrust Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, November 29, 2024. Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), revealed that the duo was arrested during a multi-agency operation on Thursday in Volkrust.

“The operation was based on intelligence about suspects dealing in drugs. Upon arrival, one suspect tried to flush some of the drugs down the toilet,” Sekgotodi stated. The team discovered more drugs hidden in the suspects’ vehicle, including in the body and tyres.

Authorities seized drugs worth R1.2 million, a Silver Mercedes-Benz C180 valued at R400,000, five cellphones worth R15,000, a weighing scale, and R2,000 in cash. It was also found that the suspects lacked valid documentation.

Their case has been postponed to December 9, 2024, for a bail hearing. Hawks’ provincial head, Nicholas Jacobus Gerber, commended community members for providing vital information that led to the arrests and the seizure of the drugs.

Nigerian businessman Isaac Fayose has spoken about what he considers one of the country’s biggest problems, stating that many Nigerians are worried about government taxation, insecurity, and the increasing rate of kidnappings for ransom.

He lamented the situation and criticized the government, arguing that these issues have become deeply rooted and that there appears to be no lasting solution in sight.

According to him “In Nigeria we have two governments. One is collecting tax, the other one is collecting ransom. Both of them have one thing in common which is to make life difficult for their people.

The one that is collecting tax without doing anything will come and share you rice and semolina. The one that is collecting ransom is doing giveaway on social media.”
